NON-TECHNICAL SURVEY

The term “Non-technical Survey” refers to the collection and analysis of data, without the use of technical interventions. The implementation for making decisions on conducting non-technical survey establishes NMAS.

  • The purpose of non-technical survey is
  • make recommendations about the definition of SHAs/CHAs
  • make recommendations about cancellation of areas
  • supporting the priority setting process

As a result of the actions carried out by the Center for Humanitarian Demining and Expertise until 2021, in total there were about 17 898 786 m2 of confirmed and suspicious hazard areas in the Republic of Armenia.

As a result of the 44-day fighting in 2020, as well as the aggression unleashed by Azerbaijan in September 2022, numerous border settlements of the Republic of Armenia  were shelled, resulting in a new level of contamination with explosive ordnance Taking into consideration the new challenges, in 2022, the Center for Humanitarian Demining and Expertise provided and conducted a large-scale non-technical survey in  Syunik, Gegharkunik, Tavush, Ararat and Vayots Dzor regions of the Republic of Armenia. The specialists of the Center for Humanitarian Demining and Expertise carried out these works within the framework of UNDP «Strengthening the Capacities of National Mine Action Authorities in Armenia» project, funded by the UK Government’s Conflict, Stability and Security Fund and implemented by UNDP. As a result of these actions, new suspicious hazard areas contaminated with explosive remnants of war were discovered and recorded in the Syunik, Gegharkunik, Tavush, Ararat and Vayots Dzor regions of the Republic of Armenia with an area of 22 141 890 m2.

As of the end of 2022, the total area of territories contaminated with mines and unexploded ordnance in the Republic of Armenia is 39 241 419 m2.

As a result of non-technical survey implemented in 2023, 2 confirmed hazardous areas, contaminated with explosive ordnances, with surface of 3 190 188 m2 were identified.

As of the end of December 2023, there are 111 confirmed and 25 suspected hazardous areas contaminated with mines and explosive ordnances with 42 165 966 min the Republic of Armenia. Gegharkunik and Syunik regions have higher level of contamination.
