The UN General Assembly recognized April 4 as International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action.
Since 2011, mine action in Armenia has been implemented, coordinated, managed and monitored by the national mine action authority; the "Center for Humanitarian Demining and Expertise" SNCO.
The picture of humanitarian mine action in Armenia today
As of the end of March 2024, there are still 111 confirmed and 25 suspected hazardous areas contaminated with mines and unexploded ordnance in the Republic of Armenia, covering an area of 42,165,966 m².
The regions with the highest level of contamination with explosive ordnance are Gegharkunik and Syunik. Taking into account the security and socio-economic impact, this year as a priority it is planned to continue the clearance of contaminated areas in Vayots Dzor region.
Currently there are registered 805 mine and EO victims.
The Center for Humanitarian Demining and Expertise" also implements explosive ordinance risk education (EORE). Within this framework, CHDE specialist conducted EORE for 3,988 citizens of the Republic of Armenia this year. This process is currently ongoing in Yerevan city and regions of the Republic of Armenia.
Today, the "Center for Humanitarian Demining and Expertise" organized open-air events dedicated to the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action in Yeghegnadzor city, Vayots Dzor region. During the event, an exhibition "Our Home Without Mines" and a demonstration of humanitarian demining activities will be presented. Meanwhile, the CHDE specialists will also represent the attendees about rules of safe behavior.
With the support of Vayots Dzor Governor's Office, the event will be accompanied by a special concert programme by talented local children.
